Store No. 12, located in Downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square, was considered one of the G.C. Murphy Co.’s flagships, along with the Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va., and Fort Wayne, Ind., stores. At one time, Store 12, which spanned a block between Forbes (Diamond) and Fifth avenues, was among the largest “five-and-dime” stores in the country and featured daily product demonstrations, a meat and produce market, a bakery and several lunch counters.

This unidentified clerk graced the cover of the 1983 G.C. Murphy Co. annual report. The ”face” of the Murphy Company was that of its dedicated, smiling clerks, many of whom began working for the company in high school and stayed until their retirement.

Beginning in 1970, the G.C. Murphy Co. capitalized on the trend toward large suburban shopping centers by opening its own discount houses called ”Murphy‘s Marts.” The Murphy’s Marts helped turn the company around in the 1970s, were soon contributing a large share to the company’s sales, and placed it solidly in the black. The location of this store is not labeled, but its appearance is typical of all of the Murphy’s Marts.
